I mean, really. What time is it on the Lake? Well, it’s “Plug Day”, of course. This might not be as breathtaking as the Fourth of July celebrations, or as emotional as Labor Day activities, but…..it has a tremendous impact locally and brings soooo many great and anticipated changes to our daily lives. On February 28th…..it was Plug Day! The magic number for Lake Martin aficionados. Let the Lazy Days of Summer begin! The Alabama Power Company has begun the task of raising the Lake level to the Summer depth, and we are more than ready for it.
The weather this Winter has been absolutely unpredictable. Unpredictable. So much rain has been good for Lake levels but that can be a good thing or a bad thing. I honestly don’t know if it’s been a good season for “fishing.” I see a number of fishing boats around but I can’t tell if they’re catching anything. They look cold to me! I do think construction projects may have suffered though.
It’s exciting, making plans for all the fun, beauty and good times to come. A feeling of anticipation for all there is to do here on Lake Martin. Lake Martin is a true “destination” now, not just a place for a short visit on the way to somewhere else. There is just about anything you want to do. Whether it be hiking, horseback riding, many kinds of water activities, camping, picnicking, festivals, concerts, art shows and more. Not speaking from personal experience, but I understand the Lake Martin 100 Ultra Run is in a class by itself. Held on March 23rd and 24th, it seems to enjoy a nationwide reputation and was voted best in North America in 2017. I’m impressed.
A new display in Wind Creek State Park explains a great deal about Lake Martin’s water quality and local environmental concerns. This was in cooperation with Lake Watch Lake Martin. We have a real jewel here, unique in the true sense of the word, and as proud of it as we are, efforts abound from many people and organizations to make sure it is preserved for future generations. They’re doing a good job and we thank them all.
